DeckerMed Africa Trust and East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) have just realized a major objective: We have published the first review in Medicine that was revised by an ECSACOP resident. Wezzie Kamanga, MD, a PGY3 trainee at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi, updated the important review on HIV Prevention, originally authored by Drs Jennifer Johnson and Daniel Kuritzkes from Harvard; they remain coauthors. Dr Kuritzkes, peer reviewed the revision manuscript: “Dr Kamanga has effectively updated our original review, demonstrating an impressive awareness of the new literature, as well as the clinical application of recent studies and guidelines. We are extremely pleased to be associated with her in this important revision.”

The event is noteworthy in and of itself, but it also heralds an exciting initiative between ECSACOP and DeckerMed Africa Trust who are supporting residents in Internal Medicine with its Weekly Curriculum™ platform which has been of great value in meeting their educational needs. We hope Dr Kamanga has started a tradition that will be emulated by other trainees and their supervisors.

The Authorship Program for trainees in Internal Medicine is just beginning to blossom. Similar initiatives are afoot in Surgery and Anesthesiology, as well.
