Nthenya Mwendwa Nthenya is the founder and designer of luxury leather bags brand labeled THE.LABEL. SABA represents “Redefined Nomadism.” Her bags are made from sustainable materials such as fish leather and cow hide; they also feature intricate bead-work. This is influenced by her mother, who is Maasai and originally comes from Kajiado County in the south-west of Kenya, where Mwendwa employs young Maasai women to do the bead-work for the bags. She aims to empower women through community-based projects to help support the women who work in the fish leather industry and those in her community as well. Global Recognition The unique use of fish leather gained significant international attention when Nthenya Mwendwa's red-fish leather wristlet was carried by singer Bianca Atterberry (Blush) at the Grammy Awards, making it the first Kenyan brand to achieve such global recognition. Atterberry has worked with Demi Lovato, K. Michelle, Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray, and Meghan Trainor, among others. One of her designs was picked by award-winning US actress Viola Davis.
