Neglected Ophthalmic Diseases

To promote sustainable, essential and low-cost surgical care and to save lives.

A Silent Crisis in Kenya

At DeckerMed Africa Trust our mission to address Neglected Women’s Diseases™ (NWD) has brought to light another critical but often overlooked health crisis: Neglected Ophthalmic Diseases (NOD). These conditions disproportionately affect underserved communities, contributing to avoidable blindness, loss of productivity and a diminished quality of life.

The Scope of Neglected Ophthalmic Diseases

NOD comprisese a range of preventable and treatable eye conditions such as cataracts trachoma, glaucoma, allergic and infectious ophthalmitis and diabetic retinopathy. In Kenya rural and low-income populations are most at risk owing to limited access to specialized eye care services, inadequate health infrastructure, and a lack of public awareness about eye health. The burden of these diseases is exacerbated by poverty, poor sanitation, and insufficient preventive healthcare systems.

Our Approach for Ophthalmic Care

Leveraging our successful model for addressing NWD™, we have integrated ophthalmic care into our free medical camps. This comprehensive approach hass five components:

Impact to Date

Through our outreach camps, DeckerMed Africa Trust has screened over 3000 patients for ophthalmic conditions, providing life-changing interventions for those who would otherwise go untreated. From restoring sight to enabling individuals to return to work and school, our ophthalmic services have a profound ripple effect on families and communities.

As we scale our operations to reach six counties in 2025, expanding our ophthalmic care services remains a top priority. To achieve this, we are seeking partnerships with donors, medical institutions, and corporate sponsors who share our vision of eliminating preventable blindness in Kenya.

A neglected ophthalmic diseases should not be a life sentence for anyone. With the right resources, abiding compassion, and collaborative effort, we can break the barriers to eye health in underserved communities. Join us in this mission to restore sight, hope and dignity to thousands of Kenyans.
